1. The chapter at a glance
The liyue archon quest, "Farewell, Archaic Lord," is Chapter I of the Archon Quests and the direct follow-up to the Mondstadt Prologue. It opens at the Rite of Descension, where the Geo Archon Rex Lapis is apparently assassinated in front of the entire city, and it closes with the truth about who he really is. The chapter swaps Mondstadt's wind-and-freedom tone for contract, commerce, and the uneasy partnership between gods and mortals that defines Liyue.
Why Liyue feels different
Where Mondstadt was a tutorial with a dragon problem, Liyue is a political mystery. The Traveler is a suspect in a god's murder, the Qixing run the nation in the Archon's name, and the Adepti watch from the mountains. That shift in stakes is deliberate: by Chapter I the game assumes you can handle investigation, faction tension, and a boss fight that needs ballistae rather than raw damage. It is also the chapter that introduces the Fatui Harbingers as personal antagonists rather than background diplomats.
2. Act list
Chapter I runs as three main acts plus a Dainsleif-linked fourth act. The three core acts are Act I "Of the Land Amidst Monoliths," Act II "Farewell, Archaic Lord," and Act III "A New Star Approaches." After those, the story continues through the "Bough Keeper: Dainsleif" prelude and Act IV "We Will Be Reunited," which the major wikis list under the same chapter. Adventure Rank gates are AR 23 for Act I, AR 25 for Act II, and AR 28 for Act III.
Act I — Of the Land Amidst Monoliths
Act I drops you into Liyue Harbor just in time for Rex Lapis to "die" mid-ceremony. You are swept up as a suspect, rescued by the Fatui Harbinger Childe, and pointed toward the Adepti at Jueyun Karst to clear your name. This act is the world-building tour: the Qixing, the Millelith, the Adepti, and the first hints that the death may not be what it seems. It ends with the Adepti and the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor consultant Zhongli agreeing to prepare a proper rite.
Act II — Farewell, Archaic Lord
Act II is the funeral-preparation act and the character centerpiece. Zhongli sends you gathering Noctilucous Jade, Silk Flowers for perfume, the Cleansing Bell from Madame Ping, and Everlasting Incense from Bubu Pharmacy, with Childe bankrolling the whole affair. On the surface it is a series of errands; underneath it is a slow reveal of Zhongli's true nature and Childe's hidden agenda. The act sets up the confrontation to come without showing its hand.
Act III — A New Star Approaches
Act III is where the plot detonates. Childe summons Osial, the Overlord of the Vortex, to force a crisis, and the Traveler defends Liyue Harbor using the Guizhong Ballista and the Adepti's aid. After Osial falls, Zhongli reveals himself as Morax, the Geo Archon, and explains that the "death" was a planned relinquishment of his divine rule. The act ends with Liyue's new order established and the gnosis handed to Signora, setting up the Snezhnaya conflict.
3. The Rex Lapis "death" plot
The fake death of Rex Lapis is the chapter's engine. The Rite of Descension is the one time each year theGeo Archon appears to his people, so killing him in public maximizes the shock and the political chaos. The twist, revealed in Act III, is that there was no murder: Zhongli arranged his own exit so that Liyue could pass fully into mortal hands, with the Qixing and the Adepti left to govern. Childe's interference was an unplanned variable that turned a controlled handover into a war scenario.
Zhongli and the contract theme
Zhongli is the chapter's anchor. Presented first as a soft-spoken funeral consultant with no money sense, he is gradually shown to be Morax, the God of Contracts, who has ruled Liyue for thousands of years. His arc is about ending the longest contract in Teyvat: his own stewardship. The "Farewell, Archaic Lord" title refers to his farewell to the old order, and the chapter's emotional weight comes from watching a god choose obsolescence.
4. Key characters
Chapter I expands the cast hard. Childe is the Fatui Harbinger who befriends you while manipulating events for his own ends; Signora is the Harbinger who collects the gnosis at the chapter's end. Ningguang leads the Qixing and proves willing to sink the Jade Chamber to win. Xiao and the Adepti, Cloud Retainer, Mountain Shaper, and Moon Carver represent the old guard, while Madame Ping, Qiqi, Baizhu, and Ganyu fill out Liyue's civilian and divine support. The Traveler moves through all of them as the outsider whose word clears the gods' name.
Childe as the antagonist
Childe is unusual for a Genshin antagonist because he is genuinely friendly even as he schemes. His goal in Liyue is to draw out a worthy fight, and Osial is his weapon of choice. The Harbinger dynamic established here, affable on the surface, dangerous underneath, recurs with later Fatui figures, so reading his act carefully pays off in future Archon Quests.
5. Bosses and the Osial fight
The signature boss of Chapter I is Osial, the Overlord of the Vortex, a massive serpentine entity summoned by Childe in Act III. The fight is not a normal DPS race: you operate the Guizhong Ballista to break Osial's shields and supports from Ningguang and the Adepti, then finish him in a scripted sequence. Earlier acts also throw Geo Hypostasis, Treasure Hoarders, and Fatui at you, but Osial is the set-piece and the chapter's hardest mechanical test.
Why the ballista matters
The ballista mechanic teaches a lesson the game repeats later: some threats are too large to kill with a team alone, and you must use the environment and allied forces. Veterans recommend bringing a strong main DPS and saving bursts for the windows after each ballista volley. The encounter is scripted enough that under-leveled teams can still clear it by following the objective prompts, which keeps the story accessible.
6. Length and rewards
Chapter I is longer and denser than the Mondstadt Prologue. Across its three core acts plus the Dainsleif-linked fourth act, expect several hours of story if you read the dialogue, with Act II's errand chain padded by Liyue's vertical city layout. Rewards scale with that length: completing the chapter grants a large Primogem total, Adventure EXP, Mora, the Geo element resonance tutorial via the Statues, and the free Zhongli-story progression that unlocks his Story Quest afterward. The clearest practical payoff is that finishing Act III opens the rest of the Liyue map content and the nation's World Quests.
Where to go next
After Liyue, the story moves to Inazuma and the Sakoku decree, but the characters introduced here keep returning, so the character roster is worth a look for Zhongli, Childe, and the Adepti. For the element at the chapter's heart, see the Geo reference, and for the region's layout and boss locations, the maps page tags the Jade Chamber, Jueyun Karst, and the Guizhong Ballista site.
